Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

SRAM front derailleur boo

Rival cage is all flexy and misshapen. Today I got more bad shifts than good, very frustrating. The shop squooshed it back into shape but it's like the Louis CK bit. "What's the cure doc?" "Nothing, you're just old and ****ty now."

Maybe 3000 miles on it. I really like the SRAM shifters but I think I'll try an Ultegra FD.

>15k miles with my Rival FD. No problems and clean shifts every time. I'd bet there is something wrong with the setup, not the derailleur.

It's physically flexing. It clearly has way more play than a new FD. Honest, it's plain old worn out. Maybe I am harder on FDs than most people, or maybe it was set up wrong at some point and that caused it to take more stress than it should have, but the current state of affairs is that it's an old ****ty FD.

I'm having to push the FD shifter WAAAYYYYY to the inside to shift onto the big ring. And even then sometimes I have to shift two or three times.

Yeah i love my Force setup but the front shifting leaves something to be desired. I was actually thinking the same thing on my ride today, might try an Ultegra FD. I've dropped my chain several times shifting into the small ring but i tweaked the limit screw a bit and seems to be fine now. Hopefully it'll stay this way.

Is the cage cracked somewhere? I've had that happen with an Ultegra FD and the crack let the cage flex, so shifting went to hell.

Or is it just worn thin and that is making it flexy?

my sram apex cage is open on one of the edges. im guessing the flexy is this opening giving under pressure

but i can set it, maybe it needs more care than others, but its not an issue personally.

I replaced my 6 month old Red FD with a Ultegra 6700, it was a big improvement, but I had to widen the cage by bending the outer cage a bit to allow me to use the 34T with the 14T and the 13T (the 12T and the 11T are off limits due to chain cross ).

I had some of the typical rival front shifting issues until I re-positioned it vertically with the bare minimum clearance above the big ring. Since then it has worked great.

Here we go again. I run SRAM Red FD with the titanium cage AND Rotor Q Rings. Works like a champ. Shifting is just as good as any other rings/cranks/brand I use. But I guess I'm special and know how to setup a FD properly or something. It takes real talent...haha
