Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Here is what the stuff looks like. You can find it at almost any drug store.

Speedplay reccomends cleat replacement at 3,000-5,000 miles:

"It is recommended that X Cleats be replaced at least every 3000-5000 miles of use or whenever
the parts show visible wear."

In my experience you can get 5,000 miles before wear from walking becomes a problem, using neither covers nor shoe goo.

Cut a slot in the screw with a Dremel tool. Takes a few seconds. For me, doing that once a year is less of a pain than using cleat covers, or muking around with shoe goo.

My cleats show visible wear much sooner than 3000-5000 miles. I change my cleats every season. I dont want my contact point to be an issue. I race on light actions. I have never unclipped. I use a dremel to remove the old ones. I dont use any cleat covers or shoe goo.

As far as cleaning the speedplay to get the road grime off, I use a Park Tool Gear Brush. I made a habit of brushing after every ride and it works. I stopped using any kind of spray lube on the cleats, just brush and it works fine. I even carry a brush with me on rides.

Get the covers when you replace the cleats. The covers do not fit well on worn cleats.
