Speedplay reccomends cleat replacement at 3,000-5,000 miles:

"It is recommended that X Cleats be replaced at least every 3000-5000 miles of use or whenever
the parts show visible wear."

In my experience you can get 5,000 miles before wear from walking becomes a problem, using neither covers nor shoe goo.

Cut a slot in the screw with a Dremel tool. Takes a few seconds. For me, doing that once a year is less of a pain than using cleat covers, or muking around with shoe goo.
