Lance is 40 and took second to a guy with 2 Olympic medals (who is admittedly almost 35, himself). I was moderately impressed.
The media would've been all over it had he won, which he was rather close to doing.

he was a world class triathlete before he was a roadie, and subsequent to that got second at leadvill off the couch, then crushed the course record the next year. i have no idea why a strong tri finish is surprising to anybody.

Of course a 'strong' tri finish was expected. But getting 2nd place (only beaten by a gold medalist) while being 40 years old after not doing triathalons for 20 years is still very impressive. I dunno if you've done a half iron-man before, but it's a big change to go from only biking to swim/bike/run.

Bikes: Specialized Tarmac Expert, 2002 TREK 520, Schwinn Mesa WINTER BIKE, Huffy Rock Creek 29er, 1970s-era Ross ten speed. All my bikes are highly modified(except the Tarmac) yet functional, and generally look beat to ****. .

We knew he was a beast - he won the friggin TdF which is way more competitive than any triathlon (although the gap is definitely closing.)
His swimming ability was pretty impressive right from his comeback to tris - didn't expect him to be able to swim first pack so quickly, but he is.
And his run off the bike in this race was hellacious, outstripping his efforts from what we've seen from his standalone running races. He really must have been honest when he said back then, that he wasn't training seriously for any of those races, as he crushed his running PRs after swimming and biking fast as well.
He gets beast status of Tdf, PEDS or not.

All the Kiwi press is slaggin' him for blanking Docherty at the finish line. Apparently he stormed past him without a word of congratulations. Although to be fair he did later congratulate him.
Looking at the footage from the race he really does look like a bit uptight.

Off the TDF for a few years, comes back and lands in 3rd place? Monster.
