Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

child trailers behind a road bike?

me and my wife both have road bikes and we ride them quite often, but its getting harder to find a babysitter now for us to go on our rides...

my sister in law has given us a trailer/encloser thing that attaches to the rear skewer, she had it on a cheap MTB that had a stud/nut combo on the skewer, i was wondering if this thing would be compatible with my quick release skewer on my trek road bike, or will i have to buy a cheap MTB with the stud/nut combo?

yes i know its a dumb question, i've never had one of these things before and it didnt come with instructions, and i've never tried to see of my QR will come apart to attach the bracket ..

any help is appreciated!

A photo of the attachment might help. I have a Burley trailer and I've towed it behind a road bike, but it has a triangular(ish) piece that attaches to the V joint of the seatstay and chainstay.

I have a Chariot trailer that I tow behind my cross bike (via the rear QR skewer) with no problems.

I tow mine behind a cheap hybrid Trek that only gets used for that (I call it my Tow Trek). It also has quick release. If yours has the figure 8 looking link where one hole goes around the skewer and the other takes the hitch from the trailer, its fine.

If it's a cup and ball hitch like the Chariot, you will probably need a longer skewer. The one I had came with the Chariot but if you don't have one, your LBS should be able to find one for you.

I don't see how it's a dumb question - it would seem to me it's important to follow the manufacturer's guidelines for safe attachment, when your kid's in the back!

I have no idea. When my kids were little, we used a trailer that clamped onto the seat post, and I had an old steel road bike with an aluminum seat post and I never gave it a thought. I had (still have) a steel MTB w/ aluminum seat post and used that one too.

AAAANNNYYY way.... first thing I'd do is look up the trailer online and find an owner's manual!

I have a Burley trailer. I used to have hitch described above by Yo Spiff, but upgraded to the newer type of hitch that attaches to the skewer. Sounds like you have a similar hitch. Yes, I use it with my $X,000 carbon bike (and other bikes). My only chance to ride on weekdays is after dropping off my 3-year-old at daycare, so I basically have no choice. I use a longer (MTB) steel skewer when I have the hitch attached. I've been doing this for several years, and its never been a problem.

The only downside I've found of the QR skewer tow mount is that it has a huge surface area that rubs against the dropout area. You might lose a bit of paint in that area.

I removed my qr skewer and installed the bracket, then hooked trailer to the bike and put about 30lbs in it and took it for a spin around some county roads to test it out, it feels like the skewer doesn't have enough thread engagement on the nut so im gonna try that mtb skewer idea.. I appreciate it!

The trailer is a cheap one.. I think its called a "step up", it was free so that's why im trying to make it work. If all else fails ill just buy a cheaper mtb to pull her around in during the week.

I've been wanting to get a new mtb for awhile anyway.. this may just be my excuse.

Again I appreciate the feedback!
