Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Road wheels vs Fixie wheels

Why are fixie wheelsets which includes tires so much cheaper then road wheels? A pair of zipps plus tires/tubes = thousands.
Something is wrong here.

You're comparing cheap junk to high quality parts.
Zipp track wheels list for similar prices as their road wheels.

And while we're at it how come I can't buy a BMW for the same price that I can get a Kia?

You can put Zipps on your fixie if you want. And my local bike shop sells cheapo road wheels for $100/pair. You get what you pay for.

Fixie gear is cheap (and low quality) because most fixies are beaters and the owners don't want to put a lot of money into them.

The ~$100 wheelset I got at my LBS has been just fine. Maybe not the lightest thing out there, but the wheels have been very durable.

Let me try...

"Fixie" stuff is usually made of cheap-er components. Case in point, the wheels you linked most likely had cheap hubs, cheap rims, cheap tires, etc. Cheap "Roadie" stuff can cost close to if not the same. The reason isn't becaue it is for a fixed gear bike, its because the parts are cheap....

For instance my "Fixie" has Dura Ace hubs for the wheels, which sell for $250.00 for just two hubs...

The hubs are KT Quando flip-flop hubs according to specs. They look aluminum and not stamped steel. Looks ok. Its cheap but I don't think its falls into the "junk" category.

Just to have a comparison point, I bought my whole fixie (S/S really) for less than $250.

It has cheap wheels (and cheap everything else), but they work fine for me.

It would be more like comparing a Bmw vs Bmw clone since at 50mph they will look the same.

Why put a lot of money into your FG if all you're going to do is walk it to the dive bar? (I kid.)

Those wheels look nothing like zipps, so it actually is like comparing a BMW to a Kia.

Fixie wheelsets are marketed toward poor morons, whereas zipps are marketed toward rich morons.
