Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shorts or Bibs

Just wanted to start a thread to see people's preference for shorts vs bibs. I rode with lycra pearl izumi shorts for 4 or so years because I did not see the need to spend more money on bibs. I purchased some bibs in the past month and I fell in love with them, I find them so much more comfortable. I'm now wearing the 2012 Specialized factory team bib (when riding) and will never go back to elastic waist bands. Let me hear your thoughts on the subject, what company/model do you like to wear and why. How far is your average ride and what would you suggest for rides of 100km or more

I just started wearing bibs, I like not having the waistband, but I find the material that extends up over the waist is a bit annoying. My average ride is 11 miles - my commute. I'd recommend both

I love bibs but I agree it is hard to part with that extra $40 on a pair of shorts

On here it's good for an argument, but I don't think I've ever met anyone in real life who preferred shorts.

My current favourites are my Gores, they've been comfortable on rides of 600+kms. They're the top of the line model from them, I don't know what they're called but they have a Cytech pad that is excellent. My Castellis with the Kiss pad are much cheaper and good for anything up to about 200 kms.

I spent the money on a pair of Raphas recently, but I bought the wrong size and haven't had the chance to get out in them since receiving the exchange. Though, I did a 340km ride in the too big pair and had no problems other than the size, so I'm hopeful these will be even better than my Gores.

I prefer shorts. Of course, that's a bit hollow as I've never tried bibs. But I can't see any reason why I would. I hate wearing anything resembling overalls or jumpsuits and as I find shorts perfectly comfortable (never thought twice about the waistband) I don't expect I'll ever try bibs.

Bibs,

I have a pair of Pearl Izumi elite and Pearl Izumi select and prefer them both over the many different shorts I have worn in the past. Though I do not think it is such a big deal as some people make it out to be. Shorts were never uncomfortable for me, but the bibs are undeniably more comfortable. It is true what they say, once you start wearing them, you wont go back to shorts.

This subject has been rehashed many times.
But Grandma says I should stick with my Pear Izumi Elite bibs,
since I commute over 30 miles a day 4 times a week and do
60-70 mile Sunday rides.

The nderwear serves no function for me, other than making it less comfortable and staying wet when sweated in.

Commando, hands down, no reason to wear underwear under them. One of the main functions of lycra is to reduce friction. If you wear underwear, you're increasing the friction and negating the positives of them being tight in the first place

Bibs, same reason I like overalls. A lot less pulling up and waist constriction.

I'm not just throwing the "use the search function" card. If you are searching for info, here is a few hours of reading for you:

Otherwise, if you're just posting to start a conversation....I prefer bibs.

True, so tuck the shoulder straps in your waist. Best of both worlds.

Next time, start the bibs-shorts thread on the 1st of the month, then no one can say we have already covered it this month.
