Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Found a guy who is selling a what I believe is a 05 Tourmalet. He's asking for $400; good deal? Good starter bike? Anyone have one from experience

I thought that was a "spine bike", carbon top and down tube and seatstays, aluminum rest, but bikepedia says all aluminum. They are not always correct, and unfortunately, Trek took down the Lemond site shortly after they took down the brand. You can certainly tell by looking. In any event, they are decent bikes, tend to have long top tubes. If it has the original Bontrager wheels, check carefully for cracks around the spoke holes. I have a 2006 Zurich, which is carbon/steel spine bike, but I believe it has the same geometry as the Tourmalet. It is comfortable, stable, reasonably light. I like it well enough that I have not felt the need to replace it.

I used to have an 07 tourmalet...the tourmalets were never aluminum spine only, always all aluminum with carbon seat stays added later. Great bike and $400 is a great price, make sure it fits but I'd say go for it.
