Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Garmin 500 Warranty

I'm looking to get an Edge 500 from a reseller on eBay. They have over 10,000 positive feedback selling GPS units, so I'm not worried about getting a bum unit from them. But they stated to me that they are a reseller, not a retailer, so I don't think Garmin will back up any warranty claim. It is about $100 cheaper than Amazon and other retailers, so I'm not sure if it's worth the risk.

Anyone buy their Garmin from an eBay store and had to send back for Warranty issues?

Thanks

If you want warranty assurance, buy it new. I bought mine used off BF, and it's served me well thus far. No problems from sweat, EFS, and a drop.

Ask the ebay reseller if the Garmin warranty is valid.

FWIW, I called Garmin to ask if the warranty is good if purchase is made from probikekit in the United Kingdom, and they replied yes. I then went ahead and bought the Edge 500.

Me too. Bought it, registered it by serial number on the Garmin website, and later sent it in for warranty repair, no problem.

The only condition Garmin has on their warranty statement is that they will not honor it if you bought your GPS at an auction. Looks like you are buying it through an ebay store with a set price so you should be good.

I bought the 500 bundle for $249.00, $100 off at Performance recently. And got the points for it.

Garmin will release the Edge 900 in '13. I would expect to see some price reductions in both the 500 and 800.

What improvements are coming with the Edge 900? The 500 is quite functionally perfect for what it does (ie no maps), so I don't think the price on the 500 is gonna drop that much when the 900 is released.

The 800 replaced the 705 without affecting 500 pricing. It's possible the 900 will replace the 800 with no affect on the 500.

Megellan has a new GPS that looks like a viable alternative to the 500. I just saw it at Costco for $170 and checked out Magellan's website: Bike mount, ANT+ sensors, works with power meters, breadcrumb nav...

You can find and download the manual under Support.
