Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cannondale R400 & Beginner Road Bikes

Hey, I'm somewhat new to the cycling world. I've been riding for about 2 years now, but it's a fixie. It was fun at first, but now I want to get a more serious bike and I'm starting to get knee problems as well. So I've been searching around craigslist for something in the $700 range, which is my budget (more or less). I fount this cannondale r400, and it looks decent. It should fit me since its a 52cm, and I'm around 5'6. What do you guys think? Is it a good price? Also, any other suggestions on good beginner road bikes?

heres the link to the R400:

I would not want a flat bar road bike unless I had some back issues that prevented me from riding with drop bars. I do not know what it would cost to change over to drop bars and STI shifters. I would look into that first and see if the changeover would be cost prohibitive. As the bike is, in my opinion, $400 is a bit steep.

I would keep looking. That's kind of a frankenbike/parts bike, mis match wheels, flat bar conversion, swapped fork, crankset seems large considering frame size, just a bunch of parts put on a frame, and an older one at that.

Way too steep for that old a bike. That frame is a good one but is is stiff. I had it on a 91 SR300. Look elsewhere if they won't cut that price big time.

so since i probably won't be getting the r400 now, any suggestions on beginner road bikes?
also, i was looking at this other great deal:
https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/bik/3591399340.html
but 56cm might be too big for me, as I'm 5'6...
