Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If you're looking to build a wheel based on a photo that's not going to work for you. A book might.

Try "The Bicycle Wheel" by Jobst Brandt.

There's always Sheldon Brown:

Local guy, Bill Mould, has a good DVD on wheelbuilding:

Depending on the hub, you most likely will have spoke overlapping adjacent spoke heads doing a 28h in 3x. In almost every case I would recommend going 2x both flanges or at least making the smaller flange 2x.

There is no difference in patterns between 2x and 3x. It is just a difference in how many holes you leave on the flange between 2 adjacent pulling and trailing spokes. Schraner does a better job of explaining in his diagrams than Brandt does.

Have fun.

If doing 3x, "over 2, under 1". 2x "over 1, under 1". As psimet said it's the same pattern, it's just how many crosses there are.
