Should my BB have a cap/cover?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Should my BB have a cap/cover?

My gf just came over and brought her bike. I noticed that her bike has a kind of alloy cap or dust cover on both the drive and non-drive side. Mine, however, does not. The threads are exposed. My bike is new from the dealership; it was purchased this way. Should I be concerned?

Here is her BB:

And here is mine, with exposed threads:

She has an external bearing cup bottom bracket, while yours is an internal cartridge bottom bracket. What you see on her bike is the cups that contain the bearings.

You don't need to be worried. They are just two different kinds of bottom bracket.

Thanks mike. Are there any differences in terms of maintenance/care/upkeep between the two? Do I need to take more care to prevent dust/dirt from getting into the threads or bearings on mine or anything like that?

No, it is a sealed unit. Just keep both bikes clean as it appears you do and both designs should last you many years.
