Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

NON-cold weather Long Sleve Jersey?

Hi guys.

I have a random question...before i ask, a bit of background:

my wife and I ride together once a week, will be going on our first century soon.
Both of us have rather large tattoos on our arms. Since sun is damaging to our tattoos, she has explicitly asked me to find her a long sleeve jersey to cover them up.

yes there is sunscreen, but she prefers to have them covered. our short sleeve jerseys only cover half of the tattoos....

so this leads to my question:

Are there any specifically WARM weather long sleeve jerseys (ie a long sleeve jersey that will keep you cool in summer)? Because my cursory research has come up with lots of long sleeve jerseys meant specifically for COLD weather.

anywho ....ill keep looking but thought id ask here.

A couple examples:

https://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product...36_-1___202490
https://www.performancebike.com/bikes...400061__400061

There are many others. I use a couple I bought several years ago. The fabric is a waffle-pattern gauze-like material that lets wind blow through, but blocks sunlight so effectively, that I can ride all day w/o using sunscreen under it.

Get a 100 g/m^2 wool base layer with long arms. I wear them all year round, riding the bike up big mountains, hiking, climbing, etc.

another thing to consider is short sleeve jersey with non-thermal arm warmers. The thermal ones are for cooler temps but they make non thermal arm warmers, this will give you both the option to cover your art when in the sun, and while not in the sun just remove the warmers and put them in your jersey pocket.

if you don't mind forgoing pockets, you can get an H2No or other wicking long sleeve jersey. I use white. Columbia Sportswear Titanium, REI, etc all sell them.

For women's stuff, check out www.teamestrogen.com -- there's a lot of long sleeves or short-sleeved+sunsleeves options, from a lot of different manufacturers (some of whom have a lot more color options available through their own sites, so use it as a starting point). Also summerweight boleros for layering over sleeveless jerseys, which I've never tried but some people really like.

White LS base layers would probably do the trick as well. I wear a SS base layer all summer long because I feel more comfortable with one on. It really doesn't make it too warm once you are moving, and I ride all summer in the hellish heat of AZ.

I use the Zoot icefill year round (white). Like others have said some of the arm coolers are nice and cool when you wet them down. The Zoot's were the best product my LBS offered and they're not cheap but I don't leave home without them. Don't use sunscreen on the arms at all. I have two pairs.

Where I live we ride 12 months a year and yes I've worn these in long rides with temps as high as 110 degrees. They work great and you do not get hot on the arms.

When it is really hot I also wear a "buff" headwear thing around my neck. Sometimes I will pull it up over the face when it is really hot, windy and dusty. It is cool and keeps the UV rays off. Got it at Academy, works great.

Seriously consider this Jersey.
Very comfortable in cold, cool and warm weather, not for hot weather.
Wore this on this evenings ride- 76 degrees start and 70 finish and was very comfortable. I wear this with nothing else down to 55 degrees, lower or with a strong wind I will add a wind breaker.
Very soft, very durable, can wear it for a week of intense cycling with absolutely no odor buildup.
The stuffs a miracle.

Long-sleeve white UnderArmor Cool Max shirts are great for limiting sun exposure and staying cool. Sorry, no jersey pockets.

Here's a women's style:

I agree on getting sun sleeves. These are the ones I use and they're a great value IMO.

WalMart, in the sports clothing dept. Many colors, and reasonably priced. Won't be long, and they will be marked down to 6 or 7 bucks..... And, they are wicking fabric....

thanks for all the input people.

So im definitely going to get a pair of cooling sleeves for myself.
but i think my wife is preferring a long sleeve summer jersey. that looks cool haha.

OR are there any jerseys that are specifically LONGER short sleeve? if that makes sense? all my jerseys (mainly capo and twin six) seem to have very short short sleeves. perhaps ill look into 3/4 sleeves for the wife...her tattoos (on both arms) are roughly a few inches up from the elbow.

been using the DeSoto Arm coolers for about 3 yrs now - work great, way cooler than bare skin.
and really help against sun damage on my forearms; which has been a problem for me, for a number of years...
a bit pricey, so I only use them whenever I'm on an extended or 'hot' ride.
otherwise I have other sets of spandex type arm coolers/covers which also help against the sun, but just not quite as cooling as the DeSotos - still way better than bare arms.
On an early start, they help cut the chill, and later they definitely keep me cooler also. works both ways.
I almost never ride bare armed anymore.

Jerseys - I found these and they are great, light and cooling, good fit good quality, true men's sizing -
https://kbcyclewerks.com/product-category/long-sleeve/
I have the EuroPro Ash Long Sleeve Cycling Jersey in Med. which seems to be sold out, but there are ladies versions as well, could email them to see if the fabric fits your needs.
