Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Why is dog spray a bad idea in a group?

Well, it finally happened. I have been warning these guys that this was a bad idea....

The "A" group has been dealing with a pack of dogs on part of the route for some time. The owner is a non responsive jerk who won't do anything, and the dogs are bandits which are mysteriously gone any time the police were called for the MULTIPLE issues they and other groups have had with them running in the road.
Last week someone got the grand idea of getting a can of dog/pepper spray. I immediately tried to tell the guy that got the can that it was designed for use alone, and to PLEASE consider what was going to happen at 20+ MPH spraying an aerosol can.

As was about usual, the dogs came running out. The guy opened up with the can of spray, the dogs flipped around and ran off. About five riders right behind ran into the cloud of spray, were blinded, and ran off into one another. The best of the best, a separated shoulder, cracked collar bone, chopped off part of an ear, and other minor injuries to go along with. One of the guys actually suffered some minor head injury, but he is fine now..well, no more mentally challenged than he was.

Sounds like you ride with a group of morons.

Maybe it's just me, but I would think stopping the bike before using pepper spray is the better idea. Common sense, really.

How many cans of whup-ass got used? Or did you just give him a severe tongue-lashing.

Seems rather ironic that this incident of mass carnage just happens to occur right after the use of pepperspray on grouprides is discussed in a dog thread here.

Third dog thread in the 41 in less than a week.

I realize there are a lot of misbehaved dogs and crappy owners out there...but seriously? Did canines everywhere get together and organize an "attack cyclist" month? I think people are over reacting a bit to all of this.

Ouch. Yesterday I was passed by a truck pulling a tank of anhydrous ammonia. The valve must have been leaking because as it passed I was nearly bowled over by the ammonia smell. I caught up with the truck a little later, pulled off the road with the driver fiddling with the valve...

Geeze! It's just like when you have to blow a snot rocket and you're riding in a group, you have to wait till you're in the back.

Cycling is too dangerous. I'm going to stick with safe passtimes like skydiving and Russian roulette.

Also, the title might as well have been "Why group rides are a bad idea." There's one in every bunch.

Makes me glad that I'm an unsociable loner (the nice kind, not the serial killer kind.) The worst I'll do is blow a snot rocket back on myself.

So true. I have had less injuries jumping out of perfectly working aircraft with 170 lbs of crap than on a 15lb bike!
