Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Alright people the weather is getting nice again and days longer. In the Spirit of My old cycling school of days past I will shoot for a 1000 mile March (31 days too. nice)

Anybody else with me?

EDIT: After reading CelticFrost's post I've decided that trainer miles will count.

I can't even fathom attempting that right now --- maybe in August or September? Then I'll try to join your minions, oh Dark Lord.

Well I can't really fathom it either, but I'm still gonna try (blood n guts effort and all that other #$@$ I always say). Besides if I fail the next month will be easier because April has longer days.

I live in a good wheather state so I may have more riding opportunities than you guys ( I know Massachussettes is tough)

500 miles will still be good. Let's see what happens.

I'll try to maximize my distance in April -- when day light savings begins and starts to get warmer.

Good luck on your goal Brett.

I'll join you.

I also believe trainer miles count, but I don't have a computer on either of my bikes right now.

I did 60 minutes on the trainer last night, I wish I knew how many miles that was.

I just filled out my vacation request form today. My company is "giving" me 22 vacation days this year. I am requesting 9 vacation days between now and May for the sole purpose of riding my bike.

It's a goal to shoot for anyway. I'll give it the ol' college try. So should we all meet back here in a month then?

Wouldn't it be reasonable to give yourself trainer mile credit based on your normal average road speed and amount of time on the trainer? I am fairly certain that my actual avg speed on the trainer would be higher than my road speed, thus I'd likely be underestimating my trainer miles. I'd like some of them to be calculated into my monthly mileage stats without adding another computer though.

Vertical, that's up to you to decide? BTW, what computer tells you your vertical gain?

trainer miles count too (so you don't have to quit your day job). Yeah, it's an ambitious goal, but what the hell?

Your right, that's why I'll have to get some rollers and/or trainer too.

That sounds reasonable. You are right though, your miles on the trainer are probably going to be higher than what you would do on the road. (so multiplying time by your typical average road speed is not bad idea)
