$#@! Stolen bike off third floor!
Woke up this morning, got ready for work, went out to the balcony (third floor) to get my bike and it was gone. I looked over the edge and saw one of my bottles on the ground below. There are some serious bike thieves out there. Where do these f***ers go to sell these bikes? I am so pissed. Third floor! Uuuuugggghhshdhruudjandjjsbwhjcqaolldb.

Do you think locking the next one to the balcony will help in future?

I probably wouldn't have felt like i needed to lock anything up on a third floor balcony either.
Bummer.

How close are you to other balconies and are you on the top floor? Seems like if the thieves didn't come from the roof, they'd have to use a long extension ladder unless they wanted access from a nearby balcony. None of those other methods sounds too convenient.
What kind of bike was it?

Boy that sucks! If they put as much effort into doing something worthwhile that thye used to steal your ride they would probably be much better off.
I guess you need to lock the next one up.

Bike thieves are the lowest of the low.

My wife has a bike there also but it was untouched. Hers is only an $800 bike, but it is almost new. Mine is (was) the bike on my profile. Drivetrain worn out, shifters beat up but functioning, front rim dented, rear rim worn. They still got a carbon frameset, $100 saddle, brakes and derailleurs.
One reason I loved the third floor. I didn't think I needed to lock it either. Roof hangs over a bit, next door balcony is similar, but just as hard to get to (and can't really get around the wall between). The bushes below where my bottle was looked disturbed as well. Pretty sure they used a ladder. So basically they knew what they wanted and how to get it. Not going to put my next bike out there, even locked up.
Still pissed.

Too bad you couldn't catch them in the act. A well timed shove would have yielded a satisfying scream and crash, along with instant justice.

1.) If you don't lock/secure whatever is on your balcony you might as well hang a "steal me" sign on it.
2.) If someone in your building wants your stuff they'll find a way to get it.
I've lived in the cheap sections and the valet your Ferrari at night sections and over those 10+ years of city/community living there was rarely a night where I came back to my apartment or condo that didn't have at least a half dozen new "help me recover my stolen property" signs in the lobby.
That's also what renter's/home owner's insurance is for, to cover this sort of loss.

Sorry to hear about your bike getting stolen. To say that it "sucks" does not even begin to describe how it feels. Hope you can get back on the road real soon.

File a police report. My house was broken into once and my guitars stolen. The detectives recovered them from a pawn shop and the thief was prosecuted for a third strike, so he's not getting out any time soon. I know that it usually doesn't end that way, but it's one more reason to keep a copy of serial numbers, photos, and receipts for your valuables. Good luck!

This has happened to one of my friends from the 4th floor with 20+ feet between balconies in his apartment building. Theory is the thieves are rappelling from apt buildings with roof access.
Edit: In the Sunnyvale/Santa Clara area, its a recurring report in the area.

Rope & coat hanger bent as a hook=neighbors (upstairs if there is a 4th floor) I would guess.
