Bummer.
Having lived in various cities for 10+ years in various configurations I've learned two things:

1.) If you don't lock/secure whatever is on your balcony you might as well hang a "steal me" sign on it.
2.) If someone in your building wants your stuff they'll find a way to get it.

I've lived in the cheap sections and the valet your Ferrari at night sections and over those 10+ years of city/community living there was rarely a night where I came back to my apartment or condo that didn't have at least a half dozen new "help me recover my stolen property" signs in the lobby.

That's also what renter's/home owner's insurance is for, to cover this sort of loss.
