Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

fizik antares seat, what am I missing?

Ok, so I got my new R5 Cervelo last week which I dearly love and have logged a 100 miles on so far. It comes with the fizik antares seat. The lack of a nerve channel (or whatever it's called) concerns me. The bike's been fitted to me and I find overall the bike to be very comfortable and not much difference from my roubaix. I do note the fizik seat for me is horribly uncomfortable (is it my 53. y.o. bony a** or just a wimp?).

Love the romin seat on my roubaix and was thinking of getting one of these to replace the fizik.

Thoughts?

I did 206 on a seat I thought that I could get use to.... Not a good idea. Run what you think is comfortable or keep looking for one that is.

A saddle is the most personal item on a bike. You have to find one that fits you. I ride the Selle SMP and it fits me perfectly. I can get on or off the bike and feel no apprehension at all. Good luck finding your perfect mate.

thanks guys, I'm going to go with the roubaix romin seat which I have on my roub. As really like that seat, failing that I'll try the selle.

As has already been stated, saddles are the most personal item on a bike. Use what works for you. Personally, I too have tried the Antares and didn't care for it. The Arione on the other hand is great for me. To each his own..... saddle that is.

I really wanted to like my Antares VS, but in the end it just didn't work. I think the Specialized saddles look like crap, but they know what they're doing when it comes to my ass, hence my Evo. Your ass may vary.

I like my Arione, didn't like the Antares. I like the Toupe not the Romin. Not only do people sit differently due to anatomy but also fitness reasons. You may find your seat compatibility change with time, so always be open to a change further down the road. Cheers

Everyone has a different toosh, it's ok if the antares doesn't work for you. I'm a huge fan of the antares vs though, have them on all of my road bikes.

Just slap the Romin on your new bike and enjoy! One thing tho, is if you're happy with the fit on the R5 with the Antares, the Romin seat may be higher or lower in relation to the rails so you may want to measure the distance from BB to saddle top and set it to be the same with the Romin.

I'm pretty sure you're contractually committed to ride the Antares until one of yer nuts atrophied....

Seriously dude, you don't have to ask 41 permission to switch yer saddle. Personally, I've tried both the Romin and the Antares, and had more success with the latter for a good long while. But then again, both my nuts been done atrophied.....

I found Antares uncomfortable when in the drops. The more I rode, the more it bothered me. Switched it for this one, never looked back. Sold the Antares 2nd hand after a month on the new saddle:

I have a Fizik something that came with my S2 frame. It looks really nice, but it feels like I am sitting on a jagged rock. I'll probably go back to a Selle Italia.
I'm not that picky in the drops though. It's more toward the back of my sit bone that is picky in a more upright tops/hoods posture.

Wasn't really looking for advice just others thoughts on the antares seat. I went out on the Roubaix today and was so comfy, so I'll be going that direction as planned.

milkbaby - thanks for the tip about measuring the seat, I'll probably mount and swing by the LBS so they can make sure it's placed well. I've loads of faith in them as they set up my roubaix, and the cervelo - cervelo is spot on too (cept for the seat.)

FWIW, the Antares works well for me. I have a few other similar saddles in terms of width of flatness that work well for me too.

Haven't had any luck with ANY fizik seat in general. The one I currently have has to be tilted down to relive soft tissue pressure until the Selle arrives. Pain so bad the area went numb for THREE days. I've never had a saddle that fit me so improperly.

Saddle is a personal thing like what everyone else is saying. For me the Specialized saddles just do not work at all (and I have tried pretty much all of them). OTOH, I am happy with an Aliante (no channel) or the Bontrager Inform (RL). I have to say, the Fizik is a lot better than the Bontrager in comfort for me.

In the Aliante, you have to go nose up to get comfortable due to its hammock design. Which one do you have?

I have a 155 Romin Evo Comp Gel that I want to trade for an Antares or Antares VS. Tried it for a few hundred miles and it's not for me. Sticking to the Arione for now, but want to try the Antares.

I have tested out several seats and have ranked them as so to my preference from best to worst.

1) 2009 Fizik Aliante (on my travel bike. Great comfort. No cutout but I think it sets my seat bones perfectly so there is less pressure on the perineum)
2) Specialized Romin Evo Pro -155 mm (on my carbon bike. Chosen mainly for looks to match the bike but not as good as the 2009 Fizik Aliante)
3) 2012 Fizik Aliante (for some reason, didn't feel as comfortable as the one I bought in 2009. Maybe the design changed slightly, it looked bulkier. Or it may not have been broken in)
4) Specialized Romin Evo Pro -143 mm (too narrow. sit bones felt fine but narrow seat ended up causing me to sit directly on cutout edges)
5) Bontrager Paradigm RXXXL (great looking and well made saddle but didnt work for me)
6) Fizik Antares 00 (intense pain. really wanted this to work cause I think it looks great and it was light. The ride was so uncomfortable it affected my performance.)

No luck with Antares for me either, and I really wanted to like it. It was wide where I don't need it yet too narrow where I do need it, and the way if flexes in the middle makes it seem like the parts supporting the bones sink and I'm left sitting on the soft tissues. I find the Aspide from Selle San Marco to be much more supportive.

We all have a different butt ananomy, I ride a Fizik Arione and a Specialized Romin which fit and feel great. Bontrager Inform RXL's were horrible.

I ride the Antares 00 carbon braided on my Roubaix. I think it's meant to ridden like a tri saddle, hence the broad flat nose. I really like it for fast rides, aero position, but it's not the saddle I would pick for day long rides. At a list price of $350 it's quite the leap of faith.
