Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

NJ to NYC via the GWB ride

Man o man what a great day for a ride. Took the mighty Gary Fisher MTB out to the city and rode with what must have been 150 other riders tooling around. That NYCscene is amazing if for nothing else the many folks in full matching Pro Kits or better yet Kits of their clubs. Many a hottie riding around in $3k bikes. Took the wheel of a group and loved riding down town with tri guys/gals on my MTB matching their speed. Cannot wait until spring.

Did you make it all the way down on the greenway aka west side bike path?

You probably saw me out there today

Also, use a road bike and ride to Nyack?

Talk about bringing back memories.

Hackensack to Central Park via GWB for the Heart Fund Cyclethon back in the early '80s, loved it. Up 9W to Bear Mtn. with one of the guys packing 2 fried chickens to munch on, heaven. Early Saturday morning ride from Teaneck to Nyack, buy a lotto ticket and then back before 0730 work. That was a quick spin.

Yup, it truly is an amazing biking scene. And come Spring the activity level just quadruples, at least.

Road Bike! No way,not yet the roads were in very bad shape I would be afraid to flat or get the old girl to dirty. It was so much fun, I made it down to 116 st on riverside and went back,20 miles total on a mtb was plenty but I will return with the Bianchi as soon as it warms up.

Bad shape as in salt and ice or weather damage (potholes, etc.)? It's killing me that the weather is so great today but I don't want to take my road bike out. When I was out for a run this morning (no more icy sidewalks!) the snow was definitely on its way out, but the roads were still pretty ugly at least where I was, and it's still going to be a while before the shoulders aren't piled with snow.

Florida advantage.....91 miles yesterday on road bike, out at 3:30AM this morning for 7 miles of pavement pounding in total solitude except for rabbits with temperature at 71F then 2300 yards swimming at 11:00AM and now getting turkey in the oven for a great protein meal. Thankfully, no more NJ for me.

Triathlete? Same here. At least I can stop treadmill running for the time being (I can't think of anything less fun except slipping on ice and breaking something).

Ah well. At least we have some pretty decent hills to climb.

Dreadmill is the worse.

I most certainly miss the hills, but riding into the wind for 20 or more miles makes up for it. Had an out and back 70.3 last year with the back into the wind. No coasting at all. Then the 13.1 started out into the wind. If that doesn't build character, nothing will.

In IMFL, plenty of wind also and was hoping for some relief after the turn around. Got some relief for a while but then the wind changed direction.

Waiting for April 15th for Kona lottery results. Don't expect it, but one never knows.

Have a great year!

Did they clear the road/stop traffic for the bikers taking over the roads?

I took my MTB for 35 miles from Brooklyn on Saturday, up the west side, making a few stops and doing a few laps of Prospect Park. It was pretty sloppy in places with the snow melt.

Today I took my road bike but stayed in Prospect Park, which only had 3 places with the snow melt across the road today. The bike stayed mostly clean. Man, I'm out of shape.

I took the MTB out too. But, found that I had strained some neck/trap muscles due to some heavy snow shoveling. Got 4 miles in and quit like a wimp. I hate this winter.

Is that a serious question? Absolutely not... some streets have bike lanes, but they're really not designed for pleasure cruises, not to mention the roads suck. Technically, bikers are supposed to follow the same rules as cars when on the street. The best place to ride in Manhattan is the west side bike path with is dedicated pedestrian and bike patch. It gets crowded at some points, but most of it is pretty nice. I goes the length of Manhattan, and from there you can take the GW bridge into NJ which also has it's own bike path/pedestrian walkway, and like others have said head up the Palisades or into Bergen country which are really nice rides, or down the other way to Liberty State Park.

I live in Brooklyn so I usually cross the Brooklyn Bridge and head over to the west side and take that up/down, sometimes go into NJ, or go over to Prospect Park. The Central Park loop is fun, but sometimes gets too crowded. The Prospect Park loop is nice too, but a little short.

Basically, it's best to stick to paths and parks, and take the roads only to get to those places.

Riverside Drive is a great alternative, especially when the Westside greenway gets crowded. Unfortunately, certain spots on Riverside Drive, particularly northbound, have become a cyclist and motorist nightmare with potholes galore.
