Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

WHAT'S IT WORTH?!? 2006 Scott Speedster s40 edition... NEED HELP ASAP

I'm trying to help a friend with MS get into cycling. Obviously with the MS she doesn't want to spend a ton to get into the sport because who knows how long or if she'll be able to ride...

Anyway, that said, I found a Scott S40 local, but they want $450... I know this is too much... what is the right number?!? I saw value quotes in 2012 thread stating $300-$350... does that mean today is $250-$300?

Looking at your pictures I see several potential maintenance issues (the chain probably needs replaced, tires, tubes, probably cables, and who knows about the BB AND HUBS).

Many factors to pricing: location, season, condition, etc. That bike would still fetch $350-400 here in July. Condition can be a negotiation tool, or sometimes you just have to walk.

Thanks for the input!

Haven't seen it in person yet so I can only go by the pics. Looks like it has certainly seen some us, but doesn't look abused.

The only S40 I've come across was a 58cm just like that, but with Cane Creek wheels. Same components, and surprisingly heavy for an aluminum bike. One word to describe it: solid. The components are solid, as Tiagra is a workhorse group, and the frame is plenty stiff, solid, and really durable. I can't speak to those wheels, but the Cane Creeks had straight-pull spokes that broke, a lot. It may have been due to poor tensioning. My friend bought one for his son, used, for $400, and it was in a better shape than that. $350 max, in my opinion, but a check of comparable models may be in order, something a bit lighter with 105. It was heavier than all of my steel bikes.

I think I'll offer $300 if it looks to fit and negotiate as high as $350. Thanks guys.

That's a nice approach. Great she has a friend like you as well. The bike will need some TLC so have her set aside a little money for that unless you plan to do it for her. That would save her even more money. Looks like the most expensive thing would be tires. Good tires don't have to cost. I always find great deals on ebay 2 x Michelin Lithion 2 700 x 23 Folding Road Bike Tires One Pair Black Blue | eBay

Thanks man! I have a lot of the stuff in spares that I can use to get her going. About the only thing she'll have to buy is the chain and tape if needed! Might even put a compact Gossamer crank on it that I put on my spare Centurion for her to ride the Bike MS on Sunday. I want my pretty polished full size Ultegra 6500 crank back on (which means she'd also get that properly maintained chain and BB too).

bicyclebluebook.com is your friend. Not definitive, but gives some great ammo to show the seller if they've priced it too high.

this says $300 would be way high for that bike with some immediate maintenance issues....

Interesting that the listing SAYS it's Sora shifters, but the ones in the picture don't looks like Sora. (Not that the picture means anything for our purposes here, I'm just sayin', BBB photo fail.)

I think it is spec fail, not photo. Pretty sure that one came with Tiagra shifters, though still 9 speed, but better than the 8 of Sora of that generation. I had an S20 that came with 105 and the S10 stepped up to Ultegra. S30 also had 105, but the frame didn't have the carbon seat stays.... and I thought it was damn ugly. So, I got the 2006 S20 instead. Pretty sure the S50 had the Sora, but I didn't look at that low of a level based on what the shop guys were telling me based on the riding I intended to do. My plan was distance and no real racing and they encouraged me to try to get to 105 if I could afford it.

just my .02
