Portable air pump on your road bike?

I got detoured from my route by some construction and had to go through a commercial/industrial area I normally avoid because of road debris. Felt the rear start bumping on my way out of it and pulled over to change. By the time I was finished the front had gone soft. In both cases the cause was small strands of wire, not much thicker than a single strand of brake cable.
I normally do carry 2 tubes, but had given one to another rider with a flat a week ago and hadn't added a second back to my kit.

I guess I'll have to practice inflating a tire with my CO2, as wasteful as it is. I wanted fast inflation and very small package, which is an oxymoron with mini pumps, though it's only 2 or 3 minutes max to inflate a tire. I had no Idea the CO2 was that fast - a couple seconds!
IMO on my bikes, I didn't like the looks or the pump being in the way inside my frame triangle. Now if it was in a small black plastic tube to keep the road grime off and protect it in a minor tip over I would have it on the seatstay, ND chainstay or under the bottom tube.

Well, ya, using a cartridge just to practice is kinda wasteful having no tangible benefit, though might provide explosive entertainment.

Like the blue anodized rims.
Need to figure out what to do with my old steel bike, never ride it any more. It's just collecting dust.

Better to waste a CO2 cartridge at home than to figure out that you don't know how it works 20 miles from your car, out in the boondocks, with dogs growling and the sound of Duelling Banjos wafting in the distance.

But you can use a banjo string to replace a shifter or brake cable in a pinch.

I'm still a fan of my Genuine Innovations SecondWind pump...it's very thin and light, tucks alongside the bottle cage on my seat tube and can be pumped manually or used with C02.

I got a new Topeak Road Morph G for my road bike after I lost the Mountain Morph I had a few years ago for my hybrid. Haven't had any flats yet this year on my Pro 4s but I have tested the pump at home to inflate and it works really well. Was able to get 110 psi without alot of work. I much prefer this type with the hose and kick-out, way easier to use and less strain on the valve. Pressure gauge is useful too even if not 100% accurate.

Blackburn road stick- 6" long, fits in my seat bag. it's never run down, forgotten, or lost.
A bit of work to get the pressure up, but then folks I see using co2 have about 50% success rate, & often have to borrow a pump anyway.

Hi Canam73,
Both tires going on the same trip is a lot more common that i had thought. I am trying to minimize what is carry, but now I don't have second thoughts of carrying two tubes with two C02 cartridges!! Wow! Thanks for sharing your experience with me.

It doesn't happen much, but it's why I carry 2 tubes and a patch kit. I'd never ride more than 20-30 miles without doubling up.

Why are you sick of buying CO2 cartridges. The plain Jane 12g ones are only $0.67 in bulk from Amazon. Buy 25 for about $16.00. You can't shop for them as a bicycle-related item. To get them cheap you have to look for them with the air guns. Mine were labeled Crossman.

You just had to bring up Banjos, didn't you. I'm really trying to get up the courage for a 03:00 A.M. commute to work yet this year....
