I was kind of in the same boat as the OP. I ended up with a 2013 Trek Domane 6.2 that is equipped with the Ultegra 6700 set up. I actually don't mind this configuration at all. Yes, the 6800 does shift smoother (relatively speaking). But, I don't enter into any type of road races. I was after the Domane for it's comfort on long rides. While I also LOVE to go fast, this 6700 set seems to be just fine for my needs. I would wait if I were the OP and see if/when Shimano comes out with an Ultegra 6900 series which is bound to be even better than the 6800 etc etc...

I would suggest getting the 15. Yes you can always upgrade components however the color is alot harder to change. Seems like you are settling, yes it's a nice savings, but if you don't get the complete satisfaction out of it because you regret not getting exactly what you want then it's not worth the savings.

It sounds like you want us to talk you into the 13. You will save money but in bikes we always regret it when we don't get what we want. If you can afford not to settle than don't settle. Get the color and groupset that you like.

+1. The compromises you settle for last infinitely longer than the memory of the savings.

6700 is a solid groupset. I ride multiple bikes with 5600 series 105, 6700 series Ultegra, SRAM Red, and have test ridden the newest Claris, Sora, and Tiagra all of which were excellent.
Don't overthink it, just buy the bike and ride the stuff until it breaks then replace with whatever new stuff you want. Just wait until you do some fast group rides with guys ten years older than you with ten year old nine speed group sets that kick your butt and you'll realize how trivial this choice is...

Hey All,
new to the forums and wanted some advice. I am a tall rider 62cm and this will be my first serious road bike (mostly for rides in central park loops, and riverside longer rides in NYC). I really liked the 2014 Domane 5.2, but can't find a close out in my size. My LBS has a brand new '13 Domane 5.2 in my size for $2500 even. Is it worth sacrificing the new Ultegra 6800 to save $1000 off MSRP on this ride? I do prefer the new 2014, and 2015 black color of viper red, but can live with the red... the question is $1000 worth the trade off on Ultegra....
I am not a pro racer, just using for exercise and to really get into the sport. I put a deposit down on the 5.2 2013, but could always change my mind and pay $3499 for the 2015 Domane 5.2 with ultegra 6800 in black.
Thoughts / Comments?
Thanks

If money isn't an issue, the 6800 group is significantly better IMHO. I have a bike with 6700 which I rode for 3 years and purchased a new bike this year with 6800. After riding the 6800 for 2K miles and occasionally jumping on the old rig I really notice a difference in performance and comfort.

Spoke to LBS, said they would charge $150 to swap out group set... put unused 6700 on Ebay, bought 6800 from Merlin... After I sell 6700 net cost will be around 300-400 for 6800. So basically got the 2015 version of the bike for 2800-2900 bucks vs $3499

One additional thought: I find the least fuss way to sell on ebay is "buy-it-now or best offer". No risk of having your goods taken away for peanuts. And with the information from prior sales that is available, you can see pretty clearly what people are willing to pay and set your prices accordingly. Also it is more trouble, but often "parting it out" will yield more dough than selling all as a groupset. It often makes sense to start with a group, then part it out if interest is low at the group price you set.
Good luck and enjoy.

Sounds like a good situation. I just bought a 2013 Madone 5.2 and saved $1300. MORE than happy with the 6700 . . . heck I was upgrading from a 28 yr. old 6 speed setup. I'm riding around 180 mi/week with 6-8K vertical climbing and I'm sure not worrying about not having those last two gears . . . BTW, whatever you do, just ride the heck out of it and enjoy it!
