Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pre-ride meal

I love oatmeal. I love eating quaker instant oatmeal before a ride. Two, 2.5 packets at the most, otherwise I get hungry 15 miles in. If I'm commuting, and don't eat before I leave, I get hungry even sooner, for some reason, and end up pushing harder to get to work thereby burning up energy stores, I feel. That pre-ride meal means a lot, yes? What do you eat? Do you eat before a commute? Or eat during? Different strokes for different folks, after all....

If it's not a stupid early morning ride, I'll have 3 eggs OE, 4-5oz of meat, 4-5oz of potato, a big bowl of Lucky Charms w/milk, and a French pot of coffee. This is what I have almost every morning.

I make my own bacon. I've been working on a maple bacon oatmeal bar for rides. Damn, now I want some coffee.

Commute nothing...but it's only 8 miles and mostly downhill

Regular ride a bowl of Cheerios is good enough for 30-35 mile ride...2 if it's much longer than that

That is a serious breakfast. What surprises me is the cross over to combine two separate breakfasts into one, hot egg breakfast and the cold cereal instead of say a bread or hotcake type dish that traditionally goes with the eggs. I know you are a big guy, but that is an impressive anount of food to manage, especially right before a ride. Good on ya if you can handle that. I am truly impressed.

My own usual practice is a small omelet made from one egg (Egg Beaters), about 2 oz of low fat meat like Canadian Bacon, 3/4 oz of fat free cheese, and about 14 oz of cafe au lait (skim). No bread and no potatoes or as we would more commonly have in Houston, grits. You can see why you impress me.

If there were ever a case of YMMV or different strokes for different folks, this it.

Same for me with lightly sweetened cold cereal. I think it causes an insulin surge that strips out all the easily available sugar. I get very hungry soon after and hypoglycemic.

I used to eat like BoSox, too, but now I'd just go back to bed after that meal!

I usually don't eat b4 I go out, but I will eat during the ride or in the middle of it...

I like dates... raisins are my ideal, and I'll usually scarf down a few handfulls of those.... Dollar tree sells these 8 oz boxes of Raisins now, **** is perfect.. I take three of those on my rides... other than that I'll like, do a couple cliff bars (peanut butter crunch flavor) usually too...

but yeah, like everyone else, when I do pre-ride meals, a nice bowl of oatmeal (a brand that doesn't use milk in it's ingredients) with a lot of sugar is pretty great...

Chex cereal with rice milk is another favorite...

I notice folks avoiding cow's milk. Lactose intolerant? Have you tried Lactaid pills or milk? They work really well for me.

Clif bars, the chocolate chip peanut crunch is my favorite, and bananas for snacks mid ride.

I tend to feel especially.....farty.....after ingesting cow milk, especially if I'm riding. It tends to make me uncomfortable during rides, for some reason.

I don't have commute rides. I only ride recreationally. On weekend rides I have 3 eggs over easy with a couple pieces of toast and sliced tomato. I also need a cup of coffee which has cream and sugar and a cup of water.

Dozen eggs scrambled and a loaf of toast.

(actually saw/heard a 350# truck driver order that one morning at a diner...didn't stick around to see it though)

Could be lactose intolerance. The lactase supplement really does work. Makes cow's milk not a problem.

^ Coffee is paramount for me too. I hate eating early, so if I am only going out for an early ~30-35 mile ride I don't eat anything. If I am going longer or planning a torture fest, I force myself to eat toast and an egg and I carry some sort of bar or gel-like object.

Hammer has something with caffeine, as I'm sure many others do. Just go shopping on Amazon or somewhere like that and you will find some.

My standard goto has been Oatmeal with an Espresso...1/2 cup oats cooked then add a tbsp or two of CHIA seeds, tbsp of coconut oil, handful of almonds, two handfuls of seasonal or dried fruit (blue berry, saskatoon berry, cranberry etc.) one big dollop of greek yogurt, a little bit of honey, stir and eat
