Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New GoPro Hero 2014 mounted footage

Recently got the new GoPro Hero and went on a couple rides during the weekend to test it. Tried it in early morning and overcast mid-day lighting. Great quality for the price point, highly recommended. Mounted it to my handlebar. Sample footage uploaded below if interested, enjoy!

Thanks. I was thinking of getting the K-edge one because apparently the GoPro handlebars aren't always secure enough.

i haven't had trouble with mine yet, but I've only used it for a few days so we'll have to see. You can dial in the resistance by turning the knobs to tighten and then further tighten by using a screwdriver. A little more involved, but I believe they made it this way as it's the only way to get it more secure in more demanding settings during action. Simply hand tightening probably wouldn't work. I have heard of it falling apart in some reviews, but only time will tell. Will update if it does. Let us know how that k edge one works. I'm not too familiar with it myself

seriously, it's definitely squirrel season. I think I saw at least half a dozen out and about during the course of a couple hours. I usually just yell something nonsensical at them very loudly and it usually freaks them out that they bolt if they're anywhere near the road and in my way, hah

Check out the barfly mount

Bar Fly for GoPro ? Tate Labs

I am getting one for my garmin cam. they are about 20$ on ebay.

Also check out the kedge computer/camera combo mount. The kedge will overall come to about 60-70$ (40$ for the kedge and 20$ for the adapter)

I sold Go Pro's when I managed a motorcycle shop until six months ago. Way over rated, too bulky, the lens doesn't rotate so you have to mount them in one position, among many other things. The Contours are much better. Most other cameras I've seen are better like such as the JVC's.

Maybe I'm not up to date on the advances in "action" cameras but I'm really impressed with the lack of wind noise. On other videos I've seen, it's a huge distraction but all I hear is you pedaling and shifting.

I don't know about bicycles but I've seen GoPro videos from the track (motorcycle), and wind noise can be horrible. And you have to buy a huge elbow mount to mount them on the side fairings since the lens is fixed. No issues with my Contour Roam2 with a windcutter going 140+. And of course if you ride in the rain you have to use that stupid waterproof case. I've sold them and seen most others and advertising is the biggest thing going for GoPro. I could have bought a GoPro for dealer cost but paid full price for a Contour.

I love my GoPro!! I use it all the time when I am out mountain biking. I have never mounted it on my road bike, but maybe I need to try that as well. The picture as always been great no matter if cloudy or sunny out. I also mounted mine on a handle and took it with me when I did a "challenge" race in Charlotte, NC. It was funny to go back and watch and listen to my wife and I "disagree" about where stuff was in the city and where to go next.. . Its a great item. Go buy one if you don't have one yet, well worth the money.

I picked one up.

having fun with it. Just a little disappointed that the battery/camera isn't removable from the case, but otherwise can't complain at $129.

Rumor is it was attached with screws instead of glue that may have caused the helmet to fail.

Duly noted... Drilling through a helmet is never a good idea.

or

How to get rid of it?

GoPro's also asplode worse than Treks*.

I do like that GoPro finally makes a "cheap" model. I'm between picking it up and just waiting for a competitor to lower their price. Leaning more towards the latter.

*personally have no issue with Treks. My friend has killed two GoPros though. They haven't been in any extreme condition (hot or cold), never smashed, bashed, or thrown. Buttons fell off and the internals gave out on two. Shame. The waterproof case was on during all of this. Each lasted about a year at moderately-light use - using a tripod to film races and to take selfies on a rope swing.
