Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Super Serious Bike Photography Question

Which chainring do you guys put your chain on for your photos? I always go with the larger. I saw in "Bicycling" they had some on the smaller. It made me puke a little in my mouth. In all my years of South East Texas semi-professional road bicycle photography, I have never produced a print from the darkroom with the chain on the small ring.

I think the "rules" say large chainring, but does it really matter?

More important is to put it on the large chainring when you are removing pedals, so you don't stab yourself!

It would be interesting to know how many buyers subconsciously decided not to purchase the Trek Emonda SLR 8 solely based on the fact that it was on the small ring in the advertisement. I'm not buying it and I can't help but wonder if this is the reason why.

You must have made the change to digital cameras. It's just a phase.

Large chainring. I don't think it matters at all unless it is some professional photo shoot or something

And most importantly, will the image ever show up in the "Hot or Not thread"? If so, small. If it's going to show up in the "New and Improved Hot or Not" thread, then large.

The one that's going to be appropriate when I put the camera away and get back on the bike.

Use f2.8 and a focal length over 50mm for whole bike.

wait....use the large ring/small cog.

wait...does it really matter?

Definitely large ring, because the small ring will spin too fast when I fall off my seat that I raised an extra 3" for the shot.

Chain on inner chainring (middle if there is 3) for to make visible the outer chainring teeth details. On the rear wheel, biggest ring.

Or go complete opposite, outer chainring, smallest in back.

In all seriousness - yes, most pictures of road bikes are taken with chain on large ring. To me - three reasons for this:

- The chain running along edge of large ring gives a cleaner look than the chain disappearing behind larger in to run on a smaller ring.
- The chain running on large ring, gives the overall loop of chain an open and more powerful look.
- The chain on large ring, also places the rear derailleur in a position low/almost perpendicular to the ground, vs. throw back/almost horizontal position it takes when on smaller rings.

These three things, IMHO, combine to give the back a clean, more powerful look, which is also implied speed by the fact the large ring is the "fast" ring.

Now I'm going to get assaulted. Thanks a lot!

Chain rings are serious business. Next, we need to delve into crank arm position.

If I was to take a picture to show something off, then I'd want it to be as impressive as possible.

that's why you won't find pictures of people's junk on the web in the "small ring" either.
