Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

when I'm bonking, it doesn't matter what I put in my mouth. Usually, I rather get something to eat fast and get some calories in my system. But one time, I was so drained I went into the grocery store and got every piece of sugary looking thing I could get my hands on, including

*cue chorus*

this past weekend though, I didn't bring enough calories, and got so wasted by the end I started feeling dizzy as I was rolling into the neighborhood. I fumbled through the cabinets like a madman and microwaved some ramen and leftover pizza and chilled, and then took a long ass nap with my cat

But most of the time, I don't eat anything special after a long ride. Perhaps I should to reward myself and get that positive feedback and condition myself to enjoy long rides more. It'll probably help with training.

Cheese burger! I like mine with lettuce and tomato. Heinz 57 and French fried potatoes. A big kosher pickle and a cold draft beer.....

I usually enjoy Champagne and caviar with my friends after a ride, but of course when none is handy a ham sandwich with a smidgen of Grey Poupon gets the job done.

A crappy Wawa hoagie my future wife bought me when I rolled into their camp site after a harrowing 11 hour ride from Philadelphia to Sea Isle City. So good.

A half pound of BBQ brisket with raw onions and a bottle of beer at Live Oak BBQ in Austin TX. Incredible!

Not exactly a post-ride meal, but nearly so:
During the last NYC Century, I'd been eating the Kind bars, fruits (banana, orange, watermelon, plums), and the pita and hummus they offered at the rest stops, but passed on the chopped up green stuff (tabouleh, I think) that they had in little cups to go with the latter. At the last stop, however, I decided to give it a try. It was so delicious, and so perfect!

I went on a group ride and the starting temperature was 40F. We got 20 miles or so into the ride and it started sprinkling. We kept going but the rain slowly got more persistant and then it was a steady rain. A very cold rain. I got back to my vehicle and could not stop shaking. I stopped at a mom and pop gas station/zippy mart; the kind that has a deli counter in the back.

That ham sandwich with cheese on white bread was the best damn sandwich I'd ever eaten.

Maybe in Taiwan that's ok, but in murrica, sushi and "all you can eat" should never be in the same sentence.
