Christmas Cycling - where did you ride over the holidays?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just the 25 miles I usually ride before work plus commuting into the office on Friday.

Christmas eve I got rained on the last three miles, although I was warm enough from riding that was refreshing.

Christmas was a bright sunny day where I enjoyed a killer headwind which added 20 minutes to my northbound leg.

That got me to 5076 miles for the year. While I'd planned on 5000, now I think 5136 (San Francisco to Tokyo) or 5200 miles (100 a week) would be better numbers.

Rode my mountain bike today on some gravel road to discover new trails that were just opened by my house. Also did some trail exploring, ended up doing more hiking than biking damn trails look rideable, until you realize that they are all leaves and slippery rock.

Taking my randonneur bike (Surly Cross Check) down the gravel road just to add in about 12 miles in the morning

Quick couple of miles up the lane with the family. Think I was on the road for a total of 15 minutes. Pleasant evening.

Did a quick out-and-back climb on Xmas eve morning, and I'll hopefully get out for a bit of climbing on St Stephen's morning too.

Did a very chilly (freezing for norcal bay area) 35 miles today, wind gusting in my face in multiple directions, especially on my way home.

I had big Xmas Day ideas and planned out a 70-mile loop here. I didn't eat or drink too much Christmas Eve and I got a good night's sleep and set off feeling ok, but a weather shift apparently brought a nasty wind and as luck would have it, I was riding into a 15-18 mph headwind most of the first 20 miles, including a pretty good climb and a narrow, winding road with no shoulder where I had to fight to keep on a straight line because it was blowing so hard. I thought there would be only a little bit of traffic, but there was more than a little and, sadly, a few crazy people. I never usually worry about traffic when I'm on my bike, but there were too close calls – both caused by a$$hole drivers (and I'm not one of those cyclists who think every driver is an a$$hole) – that sent my heart rate soaring. It was also colder than I expected, topping off at 54 and the wind factor made it feel even cooler. I probably should have worn another layer. :-(

Battling the wind wore me out I'm bummed to say so I bailed, ending up doing about 45 instead. We've had a lot of rain lately and I haven't been on my bike as much as I'd like, but I'm getting in 30 to 40 miles each ride. And, I'm working out too so I thought 70 was doable. But, even as I write this at 10 PM, it's been a long time since I felt this stiff and tired after a bike ride. The good thing is that I've come a long way since the days when I posted here about my fear of riding in the wind - there was a time when I wouldn't even go out if the wind was going to be more than 10-12 mph and now I don't really even check it anymore, obviously. Happy Holidays, everyone.

Here's a picture I took today at the top of the climb here in Sonoma wine country called Chalk Hill. The view is of where I'm headed, which is a lot of downhill from here. :-)

We took the bicycles with us, but bad weather blew in and so we ended up going for long walks instead.

We walked about 5 km on Christmas Day ... hopefully that burned a few calories. And we walked 6 km on Boxing Day.
