Self conscious noob unsure of buying aero helmet for reasons other than aero
Hey everybody,
I have been cycling for a few years now. I am not a serious racer nor do I ride track. I hate the look of helmets, but managed to find one I could tolerate as I know how important they are. I also hate wearing glasses (hate the feeling of them touching my face), but I have a vicious phobia of getting things in my eyes or losing my vision, so I have to wear simple protective cycling glasses (clear) which annoy the **** out of me but give me the confidence I need. Anyways.
TL,DR; I hate helmets and glasses.
Recently in a bike shop nearby however I saw this
Air Attack? Shield Aerodynamic Track Cycling Helmet
And instantly fell in love.
Not only do I actually like the style of it, but the visor is ideal for my eye protection needs/wants.
So I have several questions;
Is this helmet good for roads or just for riding track?
Am I going to look ridiculous wearing this out in the streets or at local races, considering I'm not at all a particularly amazing rider and certainly don't need aero equipment?
Has anyone used this helmet, track or otherwise, who can share their experience with it? Doesn't have to be this exact model/brand.
As always looking forward to hearing your thoughts,
Cheers guys n gals

I just bought the non-shielded version of the same helmet, and I tour on a single speed. They are not specific to track cycling, and are an aero road helmet. I bought this because:
1. It was $63
2. They catch fewer bugs
3. They are reported to be very quiet.
As a prescription glasses wearer, I debated the shielded version, but didn't because:
1. It was not $63
2. Prescription wrap around safety glasses are free through my work.
I have no clue and no care if others find it silly. I don't.

I bought this helmet with the visor primarily because, like you, I loved the look but also because I wear eyeglasses and don't want to buy prescription sunglasses. I use it for regular rides. I've worn it in 80-90 degree weather, and it's perfectly comfortable and not noticeably hotter than the traditionally-designed helmet that I used to wear. I'm still slow when I wear it.

Kit doesn't match
Though you're in Texas and the OP is in BC, so perhaps it might be tolerable in summer?

The visor would probably get a few odd looks, otherwise no problem.
Do whatever you feel of course -actually there was a guy wearing one of those with a visor racing CX this past season at all the races I did, thought it was pretty funny. I woulda laughed out loud but he was a really fast (:
Ive been wanting to pick up an aero lid but they are really pricey as I guess its a fad right now. I rode all last year with most of my vents taped up.

I think it looks good. I've seen a few on group rides and they don't look out of place.

Wow, if that helmet were cheaper...... As a prescription Coke-bottle wearer who has to look over the top of my glasses when riding (aggressive position) and being already blind in one eye, that shield would really be what I need!
Looks? Looks good to me. I couldn't care less about what anyone else would think. I'd feel much better about wearing something like that which isn't common- than in wearing the standard look-a-like helmets. I like to be different. If it were under $100, I'd be buying the high-vis yellow one.

I have the air attack in black and I love it. I opted for the shieldless version because I got it for a song. No weird looks, I think that non-pointy aero helmets are en vogue at the moment.

I have no idea what he based his statement on, other than his opinion. Per Giro, the Air Attack is 12% more aero than the Aeon, and 12% less aero than their Selector TT helmet. I have no idea how they reached the numbers, and they also say that the version with visor is "significantly more" aero than the non-visored version.

I have been using a Giro Air Attack Shield for a month or so and love it. It does seems a bit hotter on long slow climbs on a warm San Diego day, but not bad at all. I first wanted one cause I look the different look and attached shield. Then I started reading the good reviews, the below on aero-road helmets like the Air Attack is interesting ....
THE VERDICT
........ The most surprising part for us was the difference between an aero-road helmet compared to a standard road helmet, which can equate for as much as what a good aero-road bike can provide, or the difference in going from a set of box-section wheels to a set of deep aero wheels. Since a high-level racer could train for multiple seasons in an attempt to make the gains these helmets can provide given the right circumstances, it doesn’t make much sense for a performance oriented cyclist to pass up such an advantage.
