Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lonely, cold and fat in the great NorthEast

It is brutal out side. Snow ice wind gust up to 50 mph. Roads covered with ice & snow.....I can only dream about going for a ride.

I'm on Long Island in similar conditions and I was out riding on Sunday. Get yourself some cold weather kit (thermal barrier underlayer, winter tights, thermal long sleeve jersey, softshell jacket, gloves, skull cap hat under helmet) and you will be fine. I was out yesterday riding in 17-22 deg. weather with winds going from 15 mph gusting to 32. It was GREAT to get in a ride and not dripping in sweat.

Nope ... Australia. Tasmania to be specific. It's summer here and a good time of year to visit Australia because the kids have just gone back to school.

I did exactly that a couple days ago and wiped out over a patch of black ice while cornering at 3mph and scratched my baby. I refuse to ride her again until every bit of ice and snow has evaporated.

I remember one day before valentines day one winter browsing in a bike shop and hearing the owners say to some potential customer, "yeah right around valentines day customers start showing up again"

No crazy, just devoted

In no way did I feel cold. The kit worked as it should and I felt great. No level of sanity to be in question.

I did exactly that a couple days ago and wiped out over a patch of black ice while cornering at 3mph and scratched my baby. I refuse to ride her again until every bit of ice and snow has evaporated.
Sorry to hear that but it could happen anytime. I wouldn't let it stop you. You know have the first scratch out of the way so now you can go out and enjoy and not worry about scratching it, etc.

It did feel good though to be out getting some exercise...

cyclocross bike with studded tires, platform pedals so you can dress with normal winter gear. You don't go fast but at least you're riding.

I live in the desert west, and as such it's currently 60 - 70 degrees every day. I am currently riding 4 days / 100+ miles a week. I'd love to gloat about this, but the downside is that 100+ degree weather will be here soon. I do NOT ride in those conditions, and the best I can manage for those few months is to ride at midnight when the temp is only 80, or ride the trainer. Neither one is favorable.

I'm really thinking that what I saw on the thermometer when I got home from a 22 mile ride on a day in the summer of 2012 was pretty sweet:

I feel your pain as it's been horrible in Denver too. There were only 16 days in January where the high temp was 50 (or above) and, so far, only 13 days in February w/ the high reaching 50 (or more). To top it off, we got 5" of snow DUMPED on us last night and today!!!
