Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What are the qualities of motobecane on bikedirect ?

So I browse craiglist today and saw two very good offers, both of which have a pretty much brand new motebecane yet have a large discount. I am tempted to buy one of them but fear they are crap. Can someone with experience on these bikes help me out ? Thanks.

https://orlando.craigslist.org/bik/4918393642.html MSRP of $2k+. Usually price on bikedirect at $1k. Yet only $400 here. Model is Motobecane Nemesis 2009 I think

https://orlando.craigslist.org/bik/4922817496.html motobecane mirage pro. Checked and saw price at around $500. Only $200 here.

Or should I just go for a TREK (ALPHA 2.1 TRIPLE 2010 in good condition for $425 ?

What are the full specs on the Mirage Pro? $199 is pretty cheap.

Well, I've never seen a motobecane charged at MSRP. They're really sold exclusively on Bikesdirect for that group's price. Still, Bikesdirect seem like a good value to me, and I've seen that thought shared among here.

But of those listed (though now I can't get the links to work) I think the Trek is probably the best buy.

I can't tell you much about the Motobecane but I got a Windsor 2.0 and it rides really well.

One's a really large bike and one's pretty small. What size bike do you need? Do you actually want a tri bike? You can check the price online to see what you think of the used bike but you need to do some homework first to figure out what size bike you need.

I have owned two Motobecanes, one road bike (sold it to buy a Stradalli) and one MTB (still ride this one some). I am pleased with both. I would buy them again.

That Nemesis is a good deal, if it's your size.

My first road bike was a Motobecane from Bikesdirect- one of the low-end ones, and the quality was great for the price- it was essentially a rebranded Fuji frame. From what I've seen, that's the way it is with Bikesdirect; they get their frames from the same factories where the name-brand frames are made; you're usually just getting a major manufacturer's frame from a couple of years ago, and without the brand name.

$499 for a competent frame with Ultegra is a great deal! If it's your size, and the type of bike you want, grab it!

Motos tend to have lower resale values simply because they don't have a recognizable brand name.

The only Trek 2.1 on the Orlando CL at that price is a tiny 50cm bike. It would maybe fit someone like 5'2"-5'4" an inseam of around 26"-28".

The first thing you need to figure out, is about what size bike frame you need, and then go test ride some bikes. You can't pick a bike that fits you by reading CL ads.

I have a 3 year old Vent Noir with close to 10,000 miles, one chain and a couple of spokes.
Decent quality for the money.

I would think 54 would be too big. I'm 5'10 and I can ride 54-56 comfortably

You should spend some time with a few of the on-line fit calculators to get a better idea of what your proper size frame should be.

Here's one.

There are different ways of measuring a bikes frame size, and you can't shop for a bike by the manufacturer's sizing claims.

Think of it like buying shoes. Try on five different brands of shoes rated to be the same size by their manufacturers, and you will find the fit of every pair is different.
