Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mid-range Wheelset

Any thoughts on these wheelsets? I'm probably going to pull the trigger on a set tomorrow. These are all priced the same. I can afford to spend a little more, but these all seem like really good value, and not sure I need to spend more. I wouldn't mind having a few bucks left over after this purchase. I'd say my ability level is intermediate. Looking to keep up on quick club rides and do some entry level racing on these.

Campagnolo Zonda 1550 gm / 26 - 30 mm
Mavic Cosmic Elite S 1770 gm / 30 mm
Shimano Ultegra 6800 1640 gm / I think these are 24 mm

I'm leaning toward the Zonda's. The only thing that worries me a little is the MEGA G3 spoke arrangement on the rear. I haven't read anything bad about it, just looks really unconventional. Any input would be great.

I just ordered these.

Only 1260G 22mm Clincher Alloy Wheels 700c Kinlin XR200 Aluminum Wheelset | eBay

Haven't got them yet so can't give much of an option but the rims are pretty popular.

I do have some Vuelta Corsa Lite that are about 1560 g and $230. Been riding them over a year with zero complaints. The Corsa Super Lights are a little lighter for about $300

I have the Zondas on my CAAD10. I like them, light and ride well. I'm personally not a fan of the appearance of the rear spoke configuration but it has not been a problem as far as strength or true-ness.

Here's another option for you to consider.

BDop has DIY sets too...if your interested in building your own wheels. You get a little nicer, wider Kinlin rim too. Although this isn't a personal review, these are high on my list for my next wheelset. DIY Alloy Road Wheel Kit

Consider Race Fulcrums, had them for years on horrible roads and they are as true and round as the day I purchased them. Inexpensive and very, very, durable.

Wow, those are super light. You're probably a little more knowledgeable than I am. I don't know much about wheel components so not exactly sure what I'm looking at. I'll probably go the more conventional route with brands I recognize just for comfort level. Good luck with those. - Thanks

That's probably the main reason I didn't buy them last night. Just not sure about the spoke arrangement on the rear wheel. Glad to hear you are happy with them, that helps.

Another good looking option. Just made deciding even harder. Thanks

I read the Fulcrums and Campy's come off the same line. They aren't identical but I think the Zonda is equivalent to the Racing 3, but the Zonda is a little less expensive. That's why I was thinking Zonda.

I like "triplet" laced wheels like the Campys, but with the triplets normally spaced, not with all the open space between them. That is how I build all my BHS wheels. Nevertheless, I am always afraid one broken spoke will leave a wheel that can't be adjusted enough using the other spokes to get home on. That is already an issue on low spoke count wheels and is made a little worse with the triplet arrangement. Then spreading the triplets out like Campy does may be just one step too far.

A few weeks ago I built up a set of these. They aren't the lightest wheels, but they are cheap, strong, and work well.

The shimano wheels are 16/20 spoke. I just bought some for my 11 speed upgrade. They don't have spoke holes in the rim and are supposed to be solid (laterally solid too). I have mine at the shop now, I paired them with 28mm Bontrager R3 Tires, so I hope I will be able to change a flat on the side of the road. I hear they are tight.

Busted a spoke on my 2010 Cosmic Elites last summer. Took 4 weeks for my lbs to find out from Mavic that they don't support that wheel anymore. I'm done with Mavic for good. I still have the front wheel if you want it.

I'm using a Kysrium Elite on my trainer now because I don't trust any Mavics.

Just to be sure.....you know Ksyrium is a Mavic wheel, too, right?

(I'd be a little ticked too, if that happened to me but they're what came on my bike so I gotta at least run 'em for a full season before I ditch 'em)

I like the looks of those Boyds. Anybody running those here???

I got the Zonda's. The spoke configuration is a little weird to look at, but I couldn't find a bad word about these wheels anywhere. Bang for the buck these were hard to beat. Thanks everyone.

I was looking at the Rouleurs, but bought the Altamonts instead.
I called to check availability of the spoke count wheel set I wanted and had a great conversation with Boyd.
Just got them over the winter, they're all set up and ready as soon as the snow and ice leave.
I only found one really bad review, but latter found out it was self inflicted damage, not a defect.

The Boyds looked good, I was tempted. I definitely like to support the little guy doing good product whenever I can. Went with the Zondas mostly because of the price.

I needed some strong wheels today for rough roads, put some Shimano R560 wheels on and have to say they ride far better than there price suggests. Around 1750g a bit heavy but ride fine.
