More important than the whole "vent hole air pressure thing" thing is soaking the flux out. That's boric acid, which would love to etch away and weaken the frame if given the time. No vent holes=no...

I've had the same luck with a 15mm stubby box-end and a pump in my backpack; track bike kids don't seem to be terribly well-prepared (friends of mine though they are).

In response to your question, you are able to change your rear sprocket. Replacements are universal between other modern geared hubs (S/A, Sram, etc.). You'd be looking for a three-splined design...
