Spinning my wheels

when i upacked a new folding bike i thought it would be ready to go but my wheels just spin. What do I have to do to get the gears to engage from the handlebar shift (8 speeds)? Thanks Key West

I bought one of these from Harris Cyclery on Ebay. They are the direct importers. Whooohooo! also came with gratis carrying bag and bell! It's nice looking and set up easily but I'm waiting for word...
