Because each crankset has its own required...

Because each crankset has its own required spindle length and taper type to achieve the correct chainline. It's possible that some cranks will use the same BB spindle length as your current cranks.

Also, you will need to buy a different bottom bracket, which will cost about $40. Also, you will need a crank puller and BB removal/installer tools or pay a lbs to do this.
