I don't think you will find too many people saying that Sram is more reliable than Shimano.
It is also generally accepted that Shimano "dropped the ball" with 7900 but the models before and after...

You will need to change the rear derailleur too but not the cassette.
If you are trying to do it on the cheap I would look for some secondhand Shimano 7800 or 6600 levers in good condition.
