It does not apply to the very typical 135mm MTB hubs that the OP...

Incorrect. At least on every hub I've ever seen. Adding 2.5mm to the right side to make a 135mm hub makes no sense, as it would have the wrong chainline and wouldn't take advantage of the additional...

No way to remove anything from the right side of the hub unless it's setup wrong to begin with. But 5mm can be removed from the left side and the wheel can be re-dished.

Or just cold set the frame...
