Ergo bars like that simply aren't intended to have the drops pointing so steeply down. Makes the hooks awkward to use pretty much precludes one from using the the ends of the bars.

Bars need to be rotated down about 15 degrees or so, and hoods then need to go up that much plus a couple.

Trek of old, Cannondale of old, etc. Unless your talking very top of the line, no maker is the same as 30 years ago. Most everything made overseas with cheaper labor. Relax a bit.
