The principles are the same. Old school mtbs shift the same (mechanically) as your roadie. They just have a bit more tolerance. Learn to get that beast running sweet and your road bike will be easy.

Chain rub and shifting problems are easily solved. You can just look at a few utube videos and do it yourself. Since they offer a free tuneup I'd take it in. Then, get your hands on a beat up bike...
