I see. I don't put my merino layer directly against my skin either - I always wear a wicking T-shirt as my base layer, though my lower arms are still exposed.

You put it over a jersey, not underneath? Nothing wrong with it; I just haven't thought about putting a layer between my jersey and my outer jacket. :)

It is for me. I need at least a long-sleeve...

It is for me. I need at least a long-sleeve jersey on top of a wicking shirt in the low 50s. In the 40s, I put a shell or a windbreaker on top of them.

Okay, mine must be different. It says 84% polyester, 11% merino wool, and 5% spandex.

My wife just bought me a merino pullover from Costco for $19. Not sure it's the same stuff the OP was talking about, but this one's very good. Thin and easy to layer up, yet very warm and comfortable.
