Why do you say it could be talked down? Is there anything specific I should look out for? All my past bikes have been crappy walmart bikes so I'm not really sure what parts to look at..

I'm male, 5'11" (71in), ~130lbs. I rode a lot when I was younger but haven't for a few years now. I plan on riding on roads and smooth gravel/dirt trails. I'm trying to stay around the $300 range.
