I also thought about getting finned pads but was concerned about whether the return spring clip could adequately handle the additional weight...

Hard to isolate just the wheels from the tires, but the combo seems to run smooth and more pliant. The wheels are very quiet, no more angry whirrrrrr when freewheeling.
