IIRC, thru-axle wheels/frames/forks were originally designed to prevent wheel loss on downhill mountain bikes equipped with large diameter disc brakes. This need doesn't really transfer to loaded...

It's hard to notice - Trek barely mentions this in their website specs, perhaps intentionally.

My guess is Trek believes the 920 will appeal to MTBers, many who've owned or seen aluminum frames...

I don't think 28 spokes is as big a mistake as the F&R oddball thru-axle-only wheels/frame/fork. You can't simply buy a new 700c rear wheel from a nearby LBS and continue - you'd have to order these...

The 2016 has a SRAM 1000 crankset (42/28t) and 11-36t cassette, which provides lower gearing than the 2015 model's Shimano Tiagra crankset (50/39/30t) with 12-30t cassette.

2015: 29-121 gear...
