Good to know. The housing can be a bad thing if you rust out the cable. This bike does not see that kind of duty. I remember bottom brackets with ridges formed into them for cables. Same idea

I may split the housing into two pieces with a couple of ferrules to butt against each other at the bottom to make a drain. Sound ok?
