I'm in Tokyo too, and I'm just starting to get back into cycling, get into shape.

I did the Tokyo City Cycling fun ride last weekend, and before that I rode down to Zushi, so I can ride, but hills still kill me, as I'm still too big.

I'd be interested in rides on Sundays.

Cheers!

Hi Spire,
Have you been to the Sekido bashi Cycle Flea Market on Tama gawa? It's very close to where you live. I went in Spring but I heard it wasn't as good as
usual because of the weather.

I guess the October version of this flea market would be on the 3rd Saturday, which is the 16th, I don't know if I can go or not, But I'd sure like to!

Checking in from Machida (western suburbia again!) - The flea market sounds cool, I'm new in town so I need just about everything.

If you want a fixie or SS or an expensive old touring bike, old steel road frame, old Campy parts then they'll have something for you. If you just want something rideable for a year or so then I'd recommend Hard Off or Yahoo Auction (as noted in the other thread) I've never bought anything there but it's interesting to check out anyway.

It's a nice ride out from Shinjuku.

I'm going to try to go in Oct but I have to go on a business trip sometime in the next couple of months, going to try to make it not that Saturday.

I'm not sure if I can go in October (its the first weekend after my exams, I think I want to get out of town)
I might be able to head out in November.

How good is the turnout, usually?

It's only on twice a year Spring and Autumn. I've been two times, once years ago and once last Spring. There were fewer people in Spring but it had been postponed from the previous weekend because of rain.

There is a fairly organized group (lots of foreigners) operating in central Tokyo. You can find about the group at their website: https://halffastcycling.com/

I have gone with them a couple of times, they were to slow for me at the time... which was several years ago. I've done nothing but sit on my butt since then.

I am considering connecting up with them again, but now fear I will be to slow

I'm in Setagaya, Tokyo. My wheels are a Bike Friday Pocket Rocket that I received earlier this month.

I'm 50 and gradually building up my distances again and shedding weight.

Has anyone here done the Mt Fuji Hill Climb race in June? I am thinking of doing a run up the mountain to the fifth stage along the same course as the race, sometime before it gets to cold or snow becomes a problem (I did the rest of the route, from the 5th stage to the peak on foot in August :-) ), weather permitting.

It's over 100 km from here to Mt Fuji, so my current plan is to drive to Fujihokuroku Park by car with the bike in the trunk, park the car there and cycle to the fifth stage and coast back down again. Any idea what temperatures to expect in October?

Also, I don't have much experience with long mountain climbs yet. With an average gradient of about 5% for 24 km, will the descent be hard on the brakes?

I completed the Fuji Subaru line on Saturday with my son. 29 km uphill from Fujiyoshida IC to 5th station (close to 1500 altitude metres), then the whole route down again mostly in darkness.

The weather was great and so were the views, but the descent was freezing cold.

Having the distances to the goal painted on the road (probably from the Mt Fuji Hill Climb "fun ride" in June) was a great encouragement on the climb.

I am planning my second trip to Oshima Island with my daughter. My first trip in April 2018. I am looking forward to it. The roads are in excellent condition and the traffic is very light. The scenery is beautiful. There is just the right amount of ups and downs to make the trip interesting. I stayed at the free campground last time but this time I am going to try the paid campground.
