Need new grips
Hi Everyone,
I ride a Giant Sedona DX hybrid. I am riding in RAGBRAI in a month, first time doing the full week. I have a really hard time shifting gears when my hands are sweaty. I have the "grip shift" gear shifters on my bike. Can anyone recommend different grip shift handles that are grippier? I've tried looking around and doing searches for them but I have no clue what will fit my grips.

Material matters. Kraton is squishy, tacky, and not affected by sweat. It is also found in most grips costing 10 bucks and up so its not expensive. Many OEM grips are hard and plasticky. Go soft and tacky
Gripshift can require substantial pressure to shift. You can minimize this by lubing the cables and derailleur pivots clean.
Make sure your new grips are for L and R, as some are right/rear only
You can try gloves also. Try MTB ones, some have (or used to have) extra grippy material along the thumb and forefinger outer edge

These look interesting. They flow the air through the grips to keep your hands cool. For $9 bucks, worth a shot.

The OP seems to be complaining about the texture of the shifter itself (the part that rotates to change gear), but the products suggested so far only replace the non-shifter portion of the grip and thus won't fix the problem. I think the only solutions would be to wear gloves or to swap the grip shifters out entirely in favor of thumb shifters or trigger shifters.

mrchaotica, that is correct, the shifter portion of the grip is slick when my hands are sweaty, that is the portion I am wanting to replace, the other section I have paddle grips on to minimize the pressure on my palms and wrists. Does anyone know of a product that replaces the shifting portion?

I highly doubt anybody sells an extra-grippy replacement for the shifting portion of a grip shift. I'm not sure those things are even designed to be taken apart and serviced in the first place.
Like I said, the closest things to a replacement would be thumb shifters or trigger shifters (I prefer the latter). Note that the links are for 7-speed parts and are representative only -- I'm not recommending those parts specifically, and anyway you'd need to get ones that are compatible with your drive train (e.g. matching the number of gears on your cassette). Also keep in mind that if you do replace your shifters, you may also need new cables and housing (and to buy or borrow the tools to cut them properly).
I suppose another possibility would be to try to super-glue some rubber around the thing, or Plasti-Dip it or something. I doubt the results would be satisfactory, though.

I wanted to report my solution to the above mentioned issue. I purchased a roll of baseball bat tape. I wrapped it around my grip shifter and it worked great! So far for the last 10 days or so I have had no issues, even on a 107 mile ride Saturday with sweat and applying sunscreen twice, I was able to shift with no slipping!

Yes, a pair of gloves is probably the OP's best option. Either half fingered or full. I never ride without gloves for a multitude of reasons.....
Better grip
Protection for your hands in case you fall
Padding in the palm to stop numbness/increase comfort level
That chamois on the back to wipe the sweat away
