boredom @ work

so, other than reading this wonderful forum (I am SO glad it is here to keep me occupied) what do other people do while bored out of their minds at work? I often dream of riding, and wonder if someone might notice if I were to leave for a few hours while I go for a spin.

Of course, I browse cnn.com and nytimes.com, but then I get depressed about the state of the world and come back here.

However bored you get at work, nothing compares to a boring teacher droning on about something that you don't even understand. Better yet, the teacher droning on and confusing herself!

I just imagine myself on a ride or starting thinking of what kind of rides I should do soon and where they should be!

Finding something to munch on and then munching on it.
Staring at stupid pictures on one of those-you-know-that-with-the-pics sites.
Moderating some forums, reading others.
Staring at one point and achieving a zen-like state, putting my head on my pint mug and looking at the distorted refraction of myselft.
Scratching.
Playing on-line games like monopoly/inklink that don't require installation.
Sleeping.

God I thought I was the only one with this problem!

This is what causes the "winter weight" problem discussed in another thread.

Not only am I bored, my work station is only about 3 feet from my supervisor's work station. He is always glancing my way to see what I'm looking at on the net.
I can't even read my email messages in private. Seems he always looks over my way when I'm reading about a job that one of my job search agents found.

I caught a guy sleeping on a storage shelf once. It scared the hell out of me. He was in a quiet, almost fogotten location and had picked a low shelf with a tarp over it. When he heard me poking around, he decided he had better skedadle with the rest of the rats. He is lucky I didn't pee on him when I peed in my pants.

Anyway, there is a fellow who figured out how to fill his day. It's must be good work if you can get it!

I work as a computer/machine operator, and since about half of my day is down-time, I have plenty of time to visit the Forums. And on top of that, this year the boss decided we can no longer listen to music or read, so that means I have all that much more time to surf the web.

The funny thing, I don't get fat no matter what and how much I munch.

Maybe that has something to do with the fact that you cycle. I eat far more now (and munch more) than I ever have and I've lost 7 pounds in the last 6 weeks.

I used to get bored at work during slow times, then it got so boring and business was so bad that I got laid off from my job. Now I'm not as bored trying to find a new job. The plus side is that between my internet searches, phone calls, meetings and doing email I just "have" to take a break from it all and I actually do get to go for a ride. I would say that is the one of the few good things about not having a job. Everything else just sucks.

The other day I was pretty stressed out and decided to go out on a beautiful day and I ended up riding almost 50 miles by the time I returned. I was tired but less stressed. It is fun in a sick sort of way to tease my working clubmates about being able to ride when they are working. They of course remind me that they have a paycheck and I don't. Payback that I deserve for my snide comments.

So for those of you that are bored at work, don't look now by maybe the big layoff could be coming your way too. Hope not for your sake. If it is really bad at work then start looking for a new job. Do what you are good at and what you like to do. I'm looking at this as a new opportunity to make some changes.
