Bay Area Custom Paint?
Any recommendations for a nice custom painter who does bikes? I need something at a relatively good value but I am also looking for possible detail work on the lugs of an onld steel frame. Thanks!

That would be the Bay of Arrakis. I'm not sure if there are any good painters there, but the sandblasting is free.

I know he meant THE Bay Area being SF Bay Area because he capitalized the words. Ed Litton, Richmond,CA is one of the really good bike painters that I know of there. He is not cheap but he will match the original paint and usually has the proper decal set for the bike. Cycle art might still be around (So Cal) but I thought that the original owner sold the company **********

After a hiatus of a decade or so, Mark Bunten (aka: Dr. Deltron) is setting up a new paint shop in Marina, or so I've heard. That's the Monterey Bay area just south of you, a tad further than Santa Cruz.
Unfortunately, not many photos of Mark's work are on-line but if you Google "Mark Bunten Dr. Deltron" you'll come upon a couple of Lobster Bike frames he did back in the early nineties. I've seen many other frames he's done, which are truly phenomenal examples of custom fades and patterns. He's a very creative guy with incredible air-brush skill. If you're interested in contacting him I'll track down his e-mail.

Excellent work, excellent communication, very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. I couldn't have been more happy. Turn around time was about 3 months, but a lot of that was because it was summer and he went on an extended vacation (told me up front).

It sounds like you really want to have somebody do it for you, but sense nobody else mentioned it, why not do it yourself? I restored an old 1940's Columbia cruiser. First I had it commercialy acid dipped, then painted it with red white and blue car paint. It looks like an interesting albeit dorky peter fonda chopper. (Sorry, no pics).
Restoring a frame is a good opportunity for a learning experience, and besides, you could save some serious cash.

Joe's Carbon It's expensive $400/500 but they do a really good job, Cyclart are expensive and sometimes they works aren't perfect...
