Best routes out of Portland (OR)

Best routes out of Portland (OR)
Hope there's some people from PDX 'round here. I'm new to the area and haven't found an answer to this in any books or on the web.
I'm looking for good cycling routes by which to exit Portland, get on some lower traffic roads, and end up at a place to camp. I've explored the Historic Columbia River Highway, and Skyline, but haven't found neat places to camp. There's a nice spot on the coast I'd like to ride to, but don't care to take 26W out of the city. Is it best for me to drive for 30 minutes then get on my bike? That seems like cheating.
Any and all info on sub 24/36/48 hour trips leaving Portland would be greatly appreciated!

I live in Portland and I've been doing some bicycle exploring. One neat ride is to take the Springwater corridor out past Gresham. Get on Highway 26 and take it towards Mount Hood. Good Forest Service camping out at Zig Zag. Camp the night there, go to Government Camp, and continue to Hood River.
As far as getting to the coast, both highway 26 and Route 6 (tillamook) are a bit hairy. I've taken highway 30 to Astoria. Nice wide shoulders the whole way and then I've pedaled south on 101. Not much camping on highway 30 between Portland and Astoria but there are some hotels. Or you can cheat. Amtrack runs a bus out of Portland to Cannon Beach, Seaside, Astoria. $17 for you and $5 for your bicycle (one way). Best bargain around.

There are a lot of Russian cabbies in Portland - and a great Russian restaurant on SE Foster.

Although I don't live there, I have frequently begun or ended bike tours around Portland and have visited many. many times - twice this summer - going back to 1987. Yeah, they had bicycles AND electricity back then.
Coast - There's a great route from Scappoose thru Pittsburg and Jewell to Astoria using Scapoose-Vernonia Road, OR 47, and OR 202. Very nice and quiet. County campground near Mist. NE Skyline takes you almost to Scappoose. Also, WA 4 on the other side of the Columbia is really nice - problem is getting to Longview. The bridge at Longview has been requilt and is MUCH safer for cyclists. US 30 is O.K. - high traffic, but shoulders. Back roads north of Vancouver are better, but you have to get on I-5 for a few miles around Kalama.
Mountains - Speaking of SE Foster - you can ride out Foster to Damascus and cut over to OR 224 and up to Three Lynx. State Park at Estacada and forest campsites above the reservoir. Warning - I got the worst case of sand fleas from stealth camping along a creek up there.

Last summer a few of us took the max to the hillsborough end, rode to Banks, got on the banks/vernonia trail, then continued to Astoria on barely used roads. A really nice easy 2 day ride. We stayed overnight at the state park in Vernonia, although there's a county park a little further which would have split the ride a little better.
the hillsboro-banks ride was a bit busy but nothing like 30 or 26. we used the state bike map to guide us.
