Do all forks have the same sized....tube?

The tube that goes into the bike frame? Are they universal among mountain bikes? Or do I have to figure out what size i have on my frame? Sorry, I don't know the terminology.

Steerer tube is perhaps the term you're looking for. 1 1/8 is a common size now on Mountain Bikes, but is not the only size. In my opinion measurement would be your best bet.

Interesting indulgence you have upon deriding Foo. Anyways, it appears you merely answered the topic question, but missed, if not avoided, his other three? How unthoughtful.

So a fellow member, unknowing of certain terminology or mechanical specifics, asks four questions seeking helpful answers, only to receive a stingy "No." does not seem very hospitable.

There are multiple sizes. You need to measure the outside diameter of the fork steerer tube.

How exactly have you answered the question, ****er?
It was factual for the topic yes, but possibly confusing for Legalize to discern which question your terse response answered : the topic, the three together, or all four? And of course, your original callowly accusations about myself/Foo, but claiming this is whining? C'mon Pete, I would think of it as mere questioning the precision of your response with respect to the four questions. If you clarified your answer accordingly per question, I would not have had the need to question it myself, but Tempest's answer thankfully suffices the questions very nicely and helps much more than "No."

Interesting. So when buying a fork, what does one have to keep in mind, basically...will it fit in the steerer tube, and...will it be too high for my rear suspension?

Fagerlin... how old are you?

Based on your website, I would think you are a grown man. Based on your posts, it seems like you are a bratty NorCal teenager who had everything handed to him by his parents, and still seems to live off of it...

Maybe a little of both?

I'm gonna go ahead and guess you are going to reply pretty quickly to that one... I'll check back in five minutes...

Or maybe I won't. That may be worse to you than replying...

SST, WTF did you just say?

Legalize, I know you're a dopefiend and all that (hey, me too!), but how have you managed to be a member of a bike forum for well over a year and a half and still be this ignorant?
No offence, I'm just baffled..

Well my problem is that my bike has this lameass little fox air piston on the rear, which only has about 1" travel. I'm not sure if that will conflict with my choice of fork. I want to get this fork and Ideally move it on to my next frame, which will be better. But I'm not sure I'll be able to do that, now that I know that the steerer tube (the tube that comes off the fork? or is this the tube that the fork goes into on the frame?) can be different sizes on bikes.

I don't know if itll be oil, pneumatic, or spring. I have no idea about the pros/cons of each. I just want a nice fork that is an actual shock. It seems right now that my crappy rock shox are essentially a SPRING. It's so lame.

K.

Your '02 FSRxc should have 90mm rear travel.
You should be looking for a fork with 80-100mm travel.

Your steerer (the tube extending from the top of the fork. The only tube that isn't either of the legs. The tube that connects to the stem, allowing you to steer the bike) is 1.1/8 inch. This is the most common size nowadays.

Go check out some forks and find something that fits the above criteria and your budget.
Ride and be merry

Edit- The steerer tube on your new fork will probably be too long and will obviously need to be cut down. You could hacksaw it, but you'll be better off getting your LBS to do it.

Shock stroke length is not the same as rear travel. your rear shock has a 1.5'' stroke length, but you have 3'' rear wheel travel

most mountain bikes will have a 1 1/8'' threadless steerer tube.
yes, there are different sizes, but most bikes have the same size diameter head tube. Some new freeride bikes have a larger headtube, designed for 1.5'' diameter steerer tubes, and some older bikes have a smaller headtube, designed for 1'' steerer tubes. But, a substanially vast majority of modern mountain bikes are designed for the same steerer tube size, 1 1/8''.

there is a sticky at the top of the page to help you sort out the pros and cons. MTB FAQ

BTW, this is my last post here at BF MTB. I just waste to much damn time here. To all the regulars, its been fun.
