I run 38/48 up front and am running 9 speed on my Major Jake. I often take it offroad on some SERIOUS climbing routes. For that, I run a common 11-32 MTB cassette. Amazingly, I can do this with my short cage ultegra rear der. For commuting, road riding and cross racing, I run a 12-26 out back.

I have a 46/36 with a 12-25 10spd SRAM setup. It gives me from ~38 gear inches to just over 100, which works pretty well for my commute.

48/38 with 11-25 The 48 is too high for most off-road use, so once i'm on the dirt I basically run it as 1 x 9. I'm thinking of going with an 11-30 cassette if I can find one, or an 11-32. I have 9 speed, so I'll just buy the cassette and see if my deailleur will shift it. If it doesn't I'll pick up an XT or something. The 11-25 would go back on for road and 'cross racing.
